This book is the most fun I’ve ever worked on. Rachelle’s work is very inspiring and provocative. This book needed to be bold, like the artist herself. I wanted to make this project more than a book design.
Rachelle has photographed her own jewelry for a long time. This time I decided to pay more attention to things I knew were painstaking for her to capture: the wild range of color variations and the cast shadows. Along with the beautiful shots of her work, I also re-created illustrations of some of her most interesting photos, which turned into a nice reveal later on.
Originally, the idea was to have a series of foldouts inserted throughout the book, but then that idea morphed into making the whole book fold out into smaller booklets. When completely extended, the book could display four different long panels. Additionally, flipping through the booklets in this state could make up a variety of different compositions, mirroring the layers of color that can be seen on her jewelry.
